Mindful Eating has been shown to decrease impulsive eating, anxiety, binge eating, and lower Body Mass Index (aka BMI). Click here for list of research articles.
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention on purpose with compassion (without judgment).
A mindfulness practice allows you to respond instead of react. Mindfulness gives you full access to choice.
And I choose to eat dark chocolate! 🙂
Last night, I met with local women (one man came too – hooray!) @ Haute Chocolate and led a mindful chocolate eating experience.
The slow melt of dark chocolate and lingering cocoa aftermath was a sensory delight!
Follow my 10 Steps to Mindful Eating to enjoy your food, become in tune with your body’s desires and needs, and cultivate appreciation for what feeds you.
10 Steps to Mindful Eating
- Slow your tempo (read my Mindful Chocolate blog to learn more).
- Be aware of your surroundings (meaning be where you are, not where you are not).
- Sit and breathe in and breathe out 3 times.
- Evaluate your hunger on a scale from 1-10. Put the amount of food on your plate that represents your hunger level.
- Identify and choose what you really want to eat.
- Sense your food – view it from all sides, smell it, generate heart-felt appreciation.
- Place one bite in your mouth at a time. Sit down your utensil between bites.
- Chew slowly and savor taste in mouth.
- Listen and honor body cues of hunger, thirst, and satiation.
- Feel and express gratitude.
