There is a wood awning that covers one-third of the deck attached to my house.

Mama bird decided to make her nest inside the awning – a very safe place indeed!

The baby birds have hatched and I can hear their soft but high pitched squeaks. I love the sweetness and softness of their little bird lives and chirps.

I frequently eat my meals on the deck. I notice mama bird watching me with a worm in her mouth. She doesn’t want to go up to the nest with me watching. Then I’ll know where her babies are…I am a suspicious human.

She eventually flies into the nest, greeted by a small symphony of tiny baby bird voices. My heart opens and expands witnessing and being part of nature in this way.

I am tempted to go get my camera and take a picture of the nest and the baby birds. But I don’t.

This year, my practice is kindness. Everything I do, I am attempting to choose the most kind thing. It’s an extremely interesting inquiry.

For this particular case, it is self-serving of me to take a picture of the baby birds. It would stress mama bird out and cause unnecessary concern.

Baby birds could be frightened too.

I let my practice be kindness to mama bird and kindness to the process of nature’s unfolding.

I bring heart-felt appreciation and warmth to the baby birds’ becoming. To the care and love mama bird brings to her dependent little ones.

We are all provided for in this way.

Be kind to Mama Bird, wherever or whoever she may be.
