the picture of a man triumphant
on top of the mountain
an image of accomplished proclamation
at the end of a finish line
these are the moments
perhaps to feel good about yourself
somehow you’ve done it
you’ve overcome
and are oh so better than
I have grown weary
of the imprints of this efforting
I am tired and unresourced
for the life that requires
a stake to claim
so I won’t be chasing after it
I won’t be giving myself away like that
I have learned to appreciate
the heartfulness of a friend’s laughter
and the luxury of my lover’s touch
My eyes are not eager
with naive pursuits of false happiness
I’m soft beside the one I love
and relish in the possibility
of deep comfort and restorative strength
that comes
from not raising my hand
in victory
anymore
Look Within,
